Saga, Vol. 1 by Brian K. Vaughan

4.0

I'm not versed in graphic novels, and I wasn't sure what to think of this one while I was reading it. In fact I thought, after reading the first volume, I probably wouldn't want to continue. The world is hard, for no clear reason. I am not clear on the factions and reasons for the worldbuilding unfolding the way it has, but I have only read volume I, and leaving much to imagination and/or illustration may be an established part of this medium. But for my misgivings while reading—some of the dialogue hasn't aged well, for instance—the second I finished this volume, I wanted to read more. So it did its job well. Obviously I will pick up more in the future, and there's no doubt this is an interesting, layered world that I want to know much more about.

The art is the highlight. These spreads are incredible.
