I got this one from Amazon First Reads, which in my experience have generally been just okay. This one, however, absolutely blew me away. I thought it was so well done! The mystery was unique in that as a reader you are told what happened from the very beginning, but as the story unwinds you begin to learn other perspectives and come to find out that not everything is quite as it seems. Between faulty recollections, repressed memories, incompetent officials, and outright lies the story takes you on a whodunit adventure that never stops twisting until the very end. I had half of the mystery solved, thinking I was fully right, only for the author to throw in one last curveball literally three pages from the end.
On top of the phenomenal mystery, this novel also had some amazing relationship dynamics woven throughout the narrative. There were a lot of hard-to-swallow family dynamics, but they added a real depth to the book that I believe it would have fallen flat without. There is romance, but it never overshadowed the main storyline, which is easy to do it seems. There are small-town dynamics that were both fascinating and hilarious at times. The whole novel was just a really well put together gem, in my opinion.
