I picked this book because of some list on the internet. Like "10 shorts stories everyone must read" or something (They obviously meant The Lottery). I knew nothing about Shirley Jackson or what kind of stories she wrote. I had no idea what to expect. And wow, this collection was the best thing I read recently! The stories are unsettling, weird and disturbing. And that's what makes them so good.
