Meet Cute by Helena Hunting

Ugh. I mean...I guess it wasn't the worst book I've ever read? I suppose I'll just begin my stream of consciousness rant and hope it turns out well.

The prologue is a short chapter and the only part of the book set when Kailyn and Dax are in college. Their college years are mentioned constantly during the story, but we get basically no time to live in that world with them. It's a cute enough start but all the sudden in the final sentences of the prologue we get what amounts to "and then he betrayed me and I hated him". Coolcoolcool....that's all you got for me? The whole thing is very rushed and does a lot of telling us that they had lively debates that felt like flirting to the heroine but...that's about it.

We fast forward 5 years. He comes to her office and fails to immediately recognize her based on either her name OR face even though we come to find out that he was apparently "semi-obsessed" with her. I believe that was the terminology used. I don't know about you, but all the people I've been semi-obsessed with I would at least remember their name or face. Something. There is a lot of fuss made about him taking her card and maybe even winking at her? The next chapter fast forwards ANOTHER six months in which we find out he hadn't called or spoken to her. So why do we give a shit about him taking her card??

The book is just a bunch more of that. Kailyn talking shit about Dax based on how he "betrayed" her, but then we don't even learn what he supposedly did until far into the book. It was just a lot of contrived nonsense. And if you don't immediately know the entire trajectory of the part the aunt plays in this story then more power to you. The whole thing was obvious and more contrived drama. By the end I was skimming certain parts just trying to get to the end.

In conclusion: obvious and unoriginal.
