Hailed as a great anti-imperialist milestone; I was surprised to still read an intensely colonial work. Fantastically lush, rich descriptions are contrasted with descriptions of the greatest atrocities. Tough to stomach, yet impressive. Demands critical reflection by the contemporary reader.
