Tw: suicide
I don’t understand some of the other reviews of this book. Of course the son is going to sound “like Socrates” - his voice is literally made up by his mom trying to hold onto him and his memory, and his critiques of her writing is just how she feels about herself and her parenting skills. It made me feel even sadder upon realising this, and it didn’t play on the usual elements of sentimentality. I loved how this was written, lots of quotes that really resonated! “The unspeakable is a wound that stays open always, always and forever” is probably one of my favourites.
There’s no particular plot, which might put some people off, but I thought it was really beautiful and touching.
