Love & Other Carnivorous Plants by Florence Gonsalves

3.0

I have a very complicated relationship with this book.

Throughout the whole time reading it my temporary rating varied from 2 to 5 stars, and I'm still not sure whether 4 stars is the right thing to give. However, while I do not condone some of the messages sent by this book, most of it ended up being redeemed beautifully, and I enjoyed the writing style a lot. The afterword definitely influnced my rating as well, as it convinced me of the author's good intentions.

In the end, I very much liked the themes discussed, I cried a whole lot of 6 six times, and laughed even more. I definitely liked the writer's humour and even though her writing style maybe was a bit quirky, I could enjoy it nevertheless.

I think it's important to mention that I do not like the way eating disorders seem to be underestimated within this book. It's not clear entirely whether the author is of the same beliefs as her characters on this topic. The dangers and severity of eating disorders are downplayed a few times, and within the first half of the book, there isn't much showing the eating disordered reality of Danny.

All in all I would recommend reading it, though more for the romance, grief, and self understanding part than the eating disorder representation.

Edit: On the second read I have decided to give it 3 stars for the same reaons as listed above. I'd like to mention that I did not cry once during my re-read, which is interesting as I am quite the emotional person and got really emotional during my first read, too.
