This was the queer King Arthur retelling of my dreams. Spear is such a lovable protagonist, and I loved the way Griffith refuses to excuses any of the more questionable parts of stereotypical hero narratives. Spear doesn't kill criminals, or abandon her loved ones, or accept the status quo; she quietly challenges norms without it being about her morality. I also loved flawed Arturus, badass Nimue, and bi Llanza (which will always and forever be my favourite trope). The author's note where Griffith cites all her sources and inspirations is also something I wish more retellings incorporated. I can't wait to pick up more from this author!
