This book was such a pleasant surprise!
The Wisteria Society is so funny, the romance is deep and passionate, and every character is well-rounded, complicated, and hilarious. This book feels like both a satire of Victorian gothic and romance novels, and a love letter to them as well. As someone who has had to read a few books by female authors from the Victorian period, I was able to find a lot of nods to Austen and the Brontes, but this book is also fundamentally feminist and challenges a lot of the conventions of the classics.
Even if you have no experience with Victorian novels, there’s something in this book for you. The book is just FUNNY. The character interactions had me constantly giggling, and everything about this book was so fun.
And if you’re a fan of romance, there’s plenty of romance here too! Ned and Cecilia’s growing passion is paced really well. Honestly, the romance feels so passionate and intense, even though there’s only one particularly steamy scene. I think it’s because Cecilia is so repressed… regardless, the romance is so fun and feels so passionate, it’s amazing.
Honestly, I think this book has something for everyone. If you’re a fan of romance, historical romances, or Austen novels, I really think you’ll enjoy this.
