Nisha by Airin Efferin

“Life is unpredictable, children. We simply try. But we do not know what the dawn will bring. Whether it is luck, or magic, or even love.”

When Kak Airin offered to send me the ebook of this amazing fantasy middle-grade book in exchange of an honest review, I was so excited to get into the Nishaverse hype!

This book is about Nisha, a princess with a powerful inner movement magic who wants to assist her kingdom solve its problem, together with Saad and Faris, two guys  she doesn't trust (yet) or even know well enough. However, she does needs help and companions.

I'm not a big fantasy reader, so the book's short chapters excite for me as they keep me turning the pages. And, for someone who isn't a big fantasy reader like myself, the storyline is wonderful; it's easy to understand, so it's suitable for young readers as well. With its magical universe and impending war, I suppose this book offers a unique premise. Though I believe the world building could have been so much better if it was more detailed, especially the introduction to how magic (both inner and outer) works, because it feels like we know so little about it.

I admire how Nisha portrays the princess role as someone who can truly serve her kingdom by doing something with what she has, rather than just "getting married because that's what princesses are for." Speaking of marriage, I'm still struggling to figure out the characters' ages because Nisha appears to be mature while Ged, the future husband-to-be, appears to be the polar opposite. I'm hoping for more character interactions in the next books, particularly between Nisha and her mother. The character development isn't shown much yet, but that might be because we're still in the first book. Looking forward to see what happens next in the second book!
