22 yr old Emma appreciates this book so much more than 16 yr old Emma.
This was one of my first Heyer novels and I hadn't read it in about 5 years. I did not remember what I was missing out on!
The Thane siblings are my absolute favourite part of this book. Sarah's ingenuity and wit is just an absolute delight to read and she has very easily become a favourite Heyer heroine. I loved the scene of her teasing Tristram about his age and how she was able to draw/goad him into the various plots was so cute!
Sir Hugh meanwhile, has shot into the ranks of best and favourite side characters. His growing indignation at the events within the Red Lion brought me so much joy and laughter. The scenes with him and the Bow Street Runners are my particular favourite!
Tristram is pretty swoon worthy, who doesn't love a reliable man? I always appreciate it when the hero is intelligent but not omniscient! The scene where he, much to her gall, goes along with Sarah's story of a clandestine meeting at night brought tears of laughter to my eyes, particularly Hugh's reaction!
I also very much enjoyed Ludovic's annoyance at being herded around the inn and Eustacie's concern for him was so cute.
