I read this book for book club and I’m so glad I did. It’s the story of Felix Love, a black, queer, transgender, rising senior at a NYC prep school who is grappling with issues of identity, relationships, acceptance, and love. Felix is happy with his transition but struggling to figure out why if he’s sure he’s not a girl does he really feel comfortable as a boy. Meanwhile at his school, Felix is the victim of a bully who sends him transphobic messages and posts images of his pre transition self and his deadname on the school board. Felix tries to fight back and in the process lands in the middle of several complex relationships. This book would be golden for any teen struggling with the issues Felix is struggling with and it was instructive for me as I always have more to learn. It was a bit full of teenaged angst, however, which perhaps was necessary to make the points but seems like a bit much. Still a solid read and one that should be read widely by those in Felix’s situation and others seeking to understand more about them.
