This one really reminded me of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and I had similar issues with it. The off the wall world building was really fun but I found the central story a little bland in comparison.

The band didn't grip me and the judgement of humanity stuff felt a little obvious. I wanted more about the sentience war and the politics between the established alien groups - that was so cool.
