We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy by Ta-Nehisi Coates

5.0

What a way to end my reading year. A fantastic essay collection examining race in America, from mass incarceration to housing inequality. Coates’ arguments were engaging, interesting, and persuasive. His writing, while incredibly verbose at times, was beautiful. I’m more informed on some topics than I was before. However, I did find that while he made some excellent points on race, Coates didn’t really explore the intersection between race and gender, which I would’ve liked to see more of. Some of his ideas were repetitive, but overall I really, really enjoyed this and would recommend it to anyone who wants to gain a better understanding of race today, as well as how reactionary racism led to the election of Donald Trump.
