“The master was an old Turtle—we used to call him Tortoise—'
'Why did you call him Tortoise, if he wasn't one?' Alice asked.
'We called him Tortoise because he taught us,' said the Mock Turtle angrily: 'really you are very dull!”
Synopsis: The classic surrealist novel written in 1865, 156 years ago - Alice a young girl follows a rabbit down a hole and enters a world of bizarre contrasts and confusion and has to use her ingenuity and instincts to navigate this fantasy world.
Review: I downloaded the illustrated version for free from iBooks which I highly recommend - the Kindle version only had the text.
I don’t often read books like this not my kind of tea to be honest, I am not particularly a fan of Terry Pratchett, Jasper Fforde or other similar writers of this style. It just goes over my head, my brain doesn’t work that way it misses so much but this is a classic and although I must have read it a long time ago as a young child I don’t remember it that well and I was curious.
The illustrations are great and really bring the story alive. For me as an adult I feel it is saying that the world is often cruel and unkind and often doesn’t make sense. I am not going to deep dive there are wiser heads out there that can do that. Suffice to say I enjoyed my trip down a long forgotten memory lane.
