Shades of Light by Sharon Garlough Brown

3.0

I couldn't decide on three stars or four stars for this book. It is well-written, but I had a hard time with all the descriptions of VanGogh and his art work. I also had a hard time identifying with the main character. On the other hand, I loved that it gave me insights into the struggles that a person with clinical depression goes through. There are good questions to ask ourselves, such as how can the church help people who are struggling with emotional illness without judging them as if it is sin. On the other hand, when is an emotion that we allow to control us a sin and when is it something that can't be helped or that is the result of trauma or genetic make-up? These are good questions and there are no easy answers.
