Unmask Alice: LSD, Satanic Panic, and the Imposter Behind the World's Most Notorious Diaries by Rick Emerson

4.0

4/5 stars. eBook. I follow a TikToker who reads mostly nonfiction. I cannot remember his username, but his name is Nathan, and he gave this book a glowing recommendation. It is easy to see why. This was a unique nonfiction read for me because it read like a story. It is so well-written, and I was completely invested. I have never heard of Go Ask Alice or Jay’s Journal as they were before my time. Unmask Alice focuses on these two “diaries”. Go Ask Alice frightened parents and painted a horrid picture of LSD and other illicit drug use. Jay’s Journal addressed teen suicide and the dangers of the occult/witchcraft. The woman behind them, Beatrice Sparks, was a conniving, no-good, rotten person who systematically ruined many lives and communities with her lies. Rick Emerson did a wonderful job with this book, and I would highly recommend to anyone who has an interest in how misinformation can influence people for years. Some reviewers think Emerson had a personal issue with Sparks, but he just presents the truth that so many people neglected to see, or fact check at the time. Excellent read!
