I loved this book! The story was interesting and unique, the characters were compelling, and the book was well-written and tightly edited. Ayana Gray tells an awesome story, and I can’t wait to see what she writes next!

Koffi and Ekon are two of my favourite main characters in a YA novel in a really long time. Ekon in particular is one of my favourite male MCs since probably Lazlo Strange in Strange the Dreamer. The story takes its time, but nothing feels wasted because every moment contributes to the growth of these two characters and their arcs.

The magic and worldbuilding in this book are really interesting. I think they could have been a little better explained, but the book lays a really good foundation that I think will be elaborated on well in the sequel.

The plot evolves into something really intriguing and different from what I was expecting. It felt a natural progression of what the synopsis promised, and opens up the story. And the plot twists in this book are amazing! I’m very good at predicting plot twists, and I didn’t see these ones coming. But at the same time, each twist was well laid out, so it felt like puzzle pieces all falling into place.

I would definitely recommend this book to fans of fantasy, and for anyone who is looking for a unique and diverse world, with a compelling “reluctant allies to something more” romance.
