Death’s Edge by John Ortega
4.0
Holy Urban Fantasy!
Death's Edge is the second book of "The Rune Caster Chronicles," and I could not put this down! Readers are thrown into non-stop action with intricately woven mysteries and tons of witty banter.
John Ortega has a masterful skill for plotting, world-building, and penning richly diverse creatures.
The premise is quite enjoyable as MC Nathan Mercer owns an inn that acts as a haven for supernatural beings. This was refreshing to me for two reasons:
1) I tend to read more female-dominated urban fantasy so getting a male POV was interesting.
2) Nahan isn't employed in the conventional careers within the protective services (police/detective) etc. as is the norm in urban fantasy. Using the Inn as Nathan's base was smart on the author's as it gives a different yet uniquely creative spin.
In this installment of the series, Nathan puts his past as Winter Wolf's knight to rest and embraces his new responsibilities as the Defender of Oregon and Champion of the land. Nathan is the quintessential hero and throws himself headfirst into dangerous situations much to the chagrin of his past flame, Silera, daughter of Mab and all-around powerhouse.
Reasons why you need to read this:
-->Diverse and unconventional paranormal characters
-->Lots of familiar names, Hades (cough cough)
-->It's told from Nathan's perspective so readers enjoy a male POV which was insightful and refreshing
-->Action, Action, and Action!!!! This book hits the "Go Button" from the beginning and does not stop
-->Nathan is the King of Magical Improv and has the quintessential hero complex that causes him to dive headfirst into dangerous situations
-->Slow burn romance and "omg" plot revelations
-->Intricately woven urban fantasy
Thank you to the author and Smashbear Publication for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review
