Nice Dragons Finish Last by Rachel Aaron

3.0

An interesting mix of Fantasy and Science Fiction elements, although it tends more heavily towards urban fantasy. The scifi elements are flavoring. Self driving cars and surgically augmented thugs and things of that nature. Mostly used to help establish that this is set in a future where magic has re-appeared.

Now how to put this. I'm not sure the main character's biggest issue was his being nice. I could definitely see it as being a drawback in his world, where the majority of his family and his family's enemies and allies are all extremely ruthless. It's more that he's a slacker. I don't see how being the "one good one" of his specific fantasy species should be an excuse for doing nothing until Mom kicks him into the deep end. It's a little more noticeable when one of his siblings works at a hospital. There's a difference between being nice and just being lazy.

I found most of the supporting cast much more interesting than our hero. He's a nice straight man for his brothers Justin and Bob (of course there's a Bob; there's always a Bob in Urban Fantasy). If I were to continue on with the series, it would be more to find out what happens to them than to read more about our titular "Nice Dragon".
