For some reason, I hadn’t expected for this to be a retelling of The Little Mermaid going into it. But once I figured that out, I really enjoyed the twists that the author incorporated into her version.

To give some critiques, a lot of Lira’s values and mottos changed in a very quick, unrealistic and at times unbelievable manner that made some of her decisions just seem kind of convenient. I remember getting to one part, where I expected her to lash back with at least a slight retort of sorts, but was shocked (not in a good way) for her to be more humane in that moment. It felt rushed, and kind of out of character at times, as though she hadn’t experienced enough quite yet to change her perspective.

That being said, it was still a really enjoyable read and I really liked most of what I read. It reminded me of a more grown up version of a story I loved so much as a kid and teenager. It allowed me to reminisce and experience an all new excitement all over again.
