The Art Forger by B.A. Shapiro

4.0

I started this book on audio but I had to change my format from listening to it to visually reading it because I did not like the narrator's influence. This is so unusual for me because I typically think audio can add so much depth to a book. I have a very specific pet peeve though about this narrator. She kept pronouncing "Xavier" EX-avier. Do you pronounce the name Linda "El-inda" or the name Michael "Em-ichael"? I doubt it. Xylophone is not ex-ylophone. Xavier is meant to be pronounced ZAVIER. As an audiobook narrator, I'm surprised this is how she chose to pronounce this name. I looked up who the narrator was and her name is "Xe"! And she pronounces it X-E.
There was another scene where the protagonist was clearly having a difficult time and the narrator was so over the top with her emotional toil that I had to stop and finish reading from the physical book. I love when narrators add a little bit of their influence but this just felt excesssive (here it is ok to pronounce it EX-cessive).
Anyway.... onto the actual book. I really enjoyed the story. I'm not an artist and I know next to nothing about the art world so it was a fun dip into that world. I'd highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys mysteries, historical fiction or general literary fiction.
(I'll probably have to avoid audiobooks read by this narrator though. )
