Disappointed (again) but not surprised.
The beginning of the book was actually nice you know. I was thrilled during that "end of the world" sequence and it was so good. I also enjoyed when Paris came to the Sanctuary for Juliette. But then, everything went downhill. Juliette was back again in Oceania which is honestly so stupid. The plot is poorly done. Juliette is supposed to be the strongest person ever but she's never that.
And all the stuff about Max rewriting 'algorithms' and basically everything related to Emmaline and Operation Synthesis (or just the whole world building aspect)made no sense. The things were written just for the sake of giving it a sci-fi dystopian vibe and that was it. It was nonsensical and illogical and I was so disappointed. Nothing about the Reestablishment plan was explained well, like how it was actually done or supposed to be done. I swear there were random words thrown here and there in hopes that they would make sense, except the fact that they didn't.
Also, the few chapters written in Juliette's pov during the time when Emmeline had taken over her were meant to be confusing I guess, to show her state of mind. But they actually made no sense. I was genuinely so frustrated not gonna lie.
And I'm sorry but Juliette simping over Anderson, him making her call him her master and all those scenes made me feel so weird. I get that he's handsome and her memory is wiped but why did Tahereh Mafi has to write that?? And Warner literally kissed her memories back? What the actual fuck? Tell me that it was reasonable. Give me actual reasons to convince myself that it was reasonable and not just poor writing.
And Kenji has always been my favourite character throughout the series, the only character I've actually liked but in this book, most of the plot was told through his pov. And I love him but I must say that it was boring. I actually found myself getting annoyed by Kenji sometimes but it's understandable. He was on the verge of breakdown throughout the whole book which is reasonable since he was carrying the whole story on his back. But whatever happened which was told from his pov was extremely boring, also because this book was just dull and lackluster.
The ending was sloppy and rushed. So many loose threads and a lot of things (and characters) ignored. She got her memories back, Emmaline died and the capital was set on fire and that's it? It ended before even reaching the climax. Seriously, what the fuck was that? Like where's the actual battle in which every character participates? Ian, Winston, Brendan and others were literally gone. Like none of them, no one except Warner, Kenji and Nazeera played a role in this whole book. Not even Juliette herself. To be fair, none of the characters seemed relevant in this book except Kenji. Warner was back to his old self which was honestly so frustrating. Like no, it's not sweet or understandable that he's devastated without Juliette because he loves her so much, it's actually so annoying that loving her is the only good thing he does and the rest of his personality is just being a doućhebag. Adam had been gone since the previous installment and Juliette is just there. She is the main character but she does nothing until the ending. She was like a puppet as the plot moved her forward. She didn't do anything significant at all, except maybe destroying the Capital.
I didn't even have any expectations from this novel because I had always been disappointed while reading this series but I must say I didn't deserve that shit of an ending just to have a "cute" epilogue which wasn't even cute, just boring.
Ps: Brendan and Winston were so cute and I'm willing to read a novella of their story which is obviously never gonna get published.
