A Kids Book About Consent by Karli Johnson
informative
lighthearted
medium-paced
5.0
It's hard not to be happy while flipping through Johnson's brightly colored book. The pages filled with an enthusiastic "Yes!" do a lot to lighten the mood. Too often, we connect consent only with sexual situations, but Johnson mainly steers clear of that example and focuses on other areas where consent is important. She also addresses the woes of parents who have responsibly taught their kids "My body, my choice" who now can't get their kids to take a bath. I particularly appreciated Johnson's attention to a variety of situations that aren't consent (though this section gets a little dark, despite Johnson's best efforts to keep the example's kid friendly).
A Kids Book About consistently puts out the best books on the market about tough and abstract topics, and this one is no exception. They handle the topics with no sugarcoating and no condescension, while still exploring the content in a safe and approachable manner. The use of basic typography and colors to convey mood and meaning work better than pictures ever could.
