I think the storyline was compelling. However, I took off stars because there’s always something off to me when a white person writes fiction about slavery. It would be like somebody with Nazi ancestry writing concentration camp fiction. Even if it’s condemning the horrors of it all, it’s more important to amplify the voices of people who have suffered and continue suffering through prejudice than to sensationalize “what if” from those who benefit, even unintentionally, from the oppressors.
