Deep Dark by Laura Griffin

5.0

Deep Dark was a really good book, but a little creepy for a couple reasons. Those reasons include I live in Austin, there have recently been attacks in north Austin and a murder at UT, and I work in computers. So it hit home on more than one level.

Laney and Reed are on a case involving a dating site and murders around the city of Austin. Laney, a white hat hacker, increased security protocols for the online site after they had been hacked on more than one occasion. Reed is the homicide detective with Austin PD assigned to investigate the murders. During the investigation, Laney realizes the attacks are similar to the one that happened to her years before, the only difference is, she survived. The killer is attacking people that she knows, her friends and previous co-workers.

Reed didn't want to want Laney because she was so much younger than him, but things don't go according to plan. She doesn't listen when he tells her to stay away from the case because he believes that the killer could be after her because she is the only one that got away. She doesn't listen and continues to investigate. She finds a keylogger (a device that records all the key strokes made on a keyboard, ie passwords and usernames), in the system administrators office, allowing the killer access to the server for the dating site. She also finds a lead that breaks the case wide open and eventually leading them right to the killer.

This was a really good book and keeps you hooked. I couldn't put it down I kept wanting to know what happened next. I did not expect the killer to be who it was. I highly recommend Deep Dark!
