The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

5.0

As the posters for the new TV series adapted from this novel states, the future is a fucking nightmare. At times, I had to set this book down and walk around the block, so I could clear my head, because of how disturbed I was. How the book was able to draw such clear parallels to the world we live in--how it was able to correctly prophesied certain aspects--is nothing short of terrifying. Yet, I'd start reading again as soon as I walked back inside. The world Atwood builds in this novel is extraordinary, all the details striking, with each sentence accumulating to the horrific story our protagonist is trapped in. The fractured dialogue, which I found, at times, difficult to read much of in one sitting, is so clear in what it's trying to convey, so evocative and precise. This is an absolutely chilling novel that makes you shudder when you take a break from looking at the pages to glance at the world around you.
