How High We Go in the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu

2.0

i liked the concept (interconnected short stories set in a disastrous scenario) and the writing style was alright but i think releasing NOW and being about a global pandemic really hurts the book even if the author came up with the concept and started writing it a decade ago!!!! a lot of it rings really false to me considering how our current global pandemic has been shaking out. like... going "oh yeah capitalism will capitalize on it and go crazy with like death themed services and stuff" makes sense on its face but when capitalism doesn't capitalize on like... selling masks or air filters and really just goes "business as usual while people die let's hike prices on everything" it just seems. idk. off.

certain stories were better than others as is the way with a short story collection but it seemed to be a little like... too much too packed in, but i was giving it the benefit of the doubt until the end/big reveal or whatever which SUCKED and made me knock the book down to two stars (would have been an average 3 otherwise)

anyway. #deepthoughts
