Fly Trap by Frances Hardinge
5.0
I'm so glad Ms. Hardinge left things open at the end. It wasn't a silly cliffhanger, just a lead-in to future adventures with Mosca Mye, Eponymous Clent, and the inimitable goose, Saracen.
Already being oriented in Mosca's world via [b:Fly by Night|710437|Fly by Night (Fly By Night, #1)|Frances Hardinge|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1390878594s/710437.jpg|198421], I wasn't lost at all diving into Fly Trap. Its nearly 600 pages were full of a brand new town with a brilliant and unique prejudice system in place (daylighters vs nightlings) and more terribly interesting people all doing very interesting things. Mosca remains a very young heroine with a sharp head on her shoulders and is quickly becoming one of my favorite protagonists. She keeps her wits about her, sees through machinations of nefarious types, and manages to untangle very tangled threads. Yet, she is not at all Mary Sue-ish, she has a grumpy, stubborn streak, a willingness to law-break, and a penchant for suspicion. I like her immensely.
I won't even try to describe the city of Toll and it's crazy laws, pompous mayor, and the town Luck, but you definitely need to read this. As for me, I'm off to see what else I can snatch up of Hardinge's to savor before I run out of her books and have to wait impatiently for the next. Write, Frances, write!
