Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu
adventurous
dark
mysterious
medium-paced
- Plot- or character-driven? A mix
- Loveable characters? It's complicated
The original lesbian vampire. very mixed feelings. some parts were a little underdeveloped and others were repetitive.
there were some lines that just … agh excellent, like:
“I live in you; and you would die for me, I love you so.”
It’s visceral and emotive and really clever foreshadowing. I just left wishing there was more time spent on Carmilla and Laura themselves. The ending chapters felt a bit anticlimactic. Also read critically, of course, because there’s definitely a bit of “girl is in love w girl BECAUSE she’s a monster”
BUT its worth reading. Some of the descriptions are genuinely unsettling, not because of anything graphic or gory, just from the sense of being violated. Also excellent foreshaddowing.
