The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland by Jim DeFede

4.0

On September 11 2001, the USA was attacked when planes crashed into the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon, and into a field in Pennsylvania. At the same time, air space over the Atlantic Ocean was full of planes heading towards the United States. As the US air space was closed down, immediate decisions had to be made about all those planes. Many were returned to Europe, but for those that were close to North America, return to Europe would have been very complicated. Dozens of planes were then required to make an emergency landing at the Gander airport in Newfoundland. The entire town and towns around turned out to care for the hundreds of passengers from around the world who were thrust upon them. This is the story of how the town went above and beyond; a story of kindness; a story of bonding in difficult times. The story was sometimes a bit repetitive and I didn't really care how much people went to the bar, but overall it was well written and an intriguing story.
