The Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan

5.0

‘Wait,’ Percy said. ‘So you mean –’

‘Right,’ Nico said again. ‘But it’s cool. We’re cool. I mean, I see now … you’re cute, but you’re not my type.’

‘I’m not your type … Wait. So –’

‘See you around, Percy,’ Nico said.”’

Rick Riordan, The Blood of Olympus

In the last installment in the Heroes of Olympus series, Rick Riordan decides to pull his readers through the emotional ringer. First, Nico, the son of Hades, taking on a significant responsibility of bringing Athena's statue is resulting in him slowly fading. However, the outcome of this quest forced Nico to open up and delve into his power.

One of the most shocking things in the last two books in the series is Nico and Percy's powers' darker aspects. In the previous book, Percy uses his powers to poison vapor against an enemy. Nico uses his ability to turn a living person into a ghost. Even Piper using her charmspeak against powerful enemies. As the demigods start to push their powers' boundaries, Percy and Nico pushed their powers in a dark aspect. Riordan should have delved into the darker aspects of the demigod's powers.

On a lighter note, the Gods coming down to help their children was a nice touch. The question remains the outcome of Apollo "starting" the rise of Gaea. Even though Apollo, at least in Greek Mythology terms, is one of the worst Greek Gods, Zeus putting the blame entirely on Apollo was unfair. Even at the end, the demigods are unsure about Apollo's future since Rachel still hasn't had a vision.

The funniest part of this book was the ending as Nico tells Percy about his crush. Percy is trying to process Nico having a crush on him; Nico decides to tell Percy, 'you're cute, but you're not my type.' It was hilarious as Percy tries to process Nico having a crush on him and that in the end, he's not Nico's type. It was a powerful and cute moment for Nico as he leaps from the shadows.
