The 57 Bus: A True Story of Two Teenagers and the Crime That Changed Their Lives by Dashka Slater

challenging informative reflective medium-paced

3.5

I like this book well enough and think it's a strong addition to any YA non-fiction collection.... However. I don't like or appreciate the way that this book slides into a "he doesn't deserve this because he is a good kid" narrative around restorative justice. Restorative justice is not about saving just the good kids, but transforming the justice system entirely. You need to be able to hold the ideas that the "good kid" is guilty of a terrible crime and also does not deserve the cruel and unusual punishments he was subject to by the (legal) workings of the juvenile justice system. Regardless, it is a good introduction to the principles of restorative justice and the concepts of how class, race, and the justice system interact.
