From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout
5.0
“Truths do not always set one free.”
-The Duchess
In From Blood and Ash, Penellaphe aka Poppy is dealing with monstrous creatures called the Craven. The Craven are controlled by the Dark One, who is trying to overtake the Ascended. The Ascended’s future is put entirely on Poppy while she tries to come to terms with her role as the Maiden.
From Blood and Ash is phenomenal, it is a story with horror, suspense and romance. A book that introduces the heroine wandering around a parlor in an attempt to experience a form of normalcy. It is her attempt at normalcy starts a chain of events that result in Poppy questioning her role as The Maiden.
Witnessing Poppy struggle with her role was so fascinating and frustrating. Dealing with the given information, the reader struggles along with Poppy and the rigid rules of being The Maiden. The Maiden is forced to keep her powers contained and watch as innocent people become victims to The Craven. At first, it is not suspicious but rather frustrating that the Duke and the Duchess force The Maiden to be this helpless figure.
Due to this submission, from the Duke and Duchess, Poppy finds ways to strengthen herself. With the help of her guard, Vikter. Vikter, Poppy's Royal Guard, helped her from being a damsel in distress by training her in hand to hand combat. Even with Vikter's help, Poppy remains stifle under the watchful eye of The Duke. The Duke being such a sinister villain it is hard to witness his vindictive and destructive actions.
During Poppy's struggle with the restrictive nature of her role with the watchful eye of The Duke, the new Royal Guard Hawke enters her life. Unlike the father figure Vikter, Hawke is a young Royal Guard blessed with charms and good looks. It sends Poppy into a whirlwind of emotions and causes friction with the people in her life. As Poppy begins to trust Hawke, Hawke begins shows his interest in Poppy as he begins to uncover her secrets.
Of course, it did have so many twists and I was so mad towards the end of the book. However, it’s a great read that’ll keep you guessing.
