Siren Rise by Bettina M. Johnson
4.0
Every once in a while, an absolutely remarkable novel comes along that features a unique premise, boldly strong characters, and the ability to grip you entirely- Siren Rise is one such novel
Siren Rise caught me by surprise in the best way possible with its brilliant backstory and endearing characters. Tarni Vanderzee is an absolute gem and a refreshing breath of fresh air amongst the hustle and bustle of the Fantasy/PNR genre. Tarni is unique with her Siren and dark witch parentage and her personality reflects that.
Siren Rise is a superbly written urban fantasy that seamlessly blends the human world with the paranormal. I applaud the author for combining the harsh realities of the human world and the unforgiving nature of the supernatural world.
There is such a powerful evocation of women's rights, freedom, and liberty seen in Tarni's journey that resonated with me. Tarni's rebellion against the systematic brainwashing of women as subservient to men was commendable. Even when she slipped off the bandwagon and allowed herself to become engrossed in emotions and love over her dreams and mission, I felt the realism of it all. Who hasn't forsaken their desires for a handsome man?
I adored The Little Mermaid and pop culture references (what's a mermaid book without it tbh) and Tarni's highly relatable inner monologue. Her diversity as a character was truly enjoyable, from her hilarious innuendos and snazzy one-liners to her heart-wrenching despair and emotional ruin- I was hooked. I honestly didn't feel like I was reading a novel, but rather following along on a journey with a friend as she tells me her deepest darkest secrets.
The author laid such a temptingly delicious trap for readers in the form of Logan, who I was determined to dislike for his perfidious mannerisms and abhorrent treatment of Tarni but somewhere between the middle the lines started blurring and nothing was quite what it seemed. There is such passion, intensity, and depravity between Logan and Tarni that dominates the pages and makes for such a compelling read.
Everything I thought I knew was total horse crap and I became embroiled in a captivating world of love, heartache, and betrayal shrouded in mystery. The author teases readers with snippets of truth beyond the veil and like a starving animal I gratefully lapped up all the half-truths wanting more.
My only beef with this book is not even really with the book but the author, Ms. Bettina Johnson, how dare you leave me hanging like this? I absolutely NEED book two this instance as I must know what transpired with my favorite Siren who has finally been left to the sharks to sink or swim.
Thank you to Reedsy Discovery for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review.
