The Secret History by Donna Tartt

3.0

3.25 stars. Physical book. I thoroughly enjoyed The Goldfinch and knew this book would not disappoint. It is a thriller, told from the perspective of Richard, a classics student with his group of eccentric classmates. The first 75 pages were laden with so much of their studies that I could understand if readers chose to not finish the book at this point; then the story picks up and things get rolling. I enjoyed the book, but found the sprinkling of Greek and classical references a bit like the author was trying too hard at times. Really this story could have been told without the need of all of that. Essentially, some college students get carried away and strange things happen. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys thrillers, but if you are the type of person who has to look up every word or phrase you don’t know, the first part of the book will be exhausting and kind of distracting. I don’t agree with the description of this book as saying their teacher inspired them to think of a new way of life, as the teacher, to me, seemed more of a minor character. He certainly didn’t go around recommending bacchanals that ultimately led to the death of three people and the shaken mental stability oh several others.
