Within These Lines by Stephanie Morrill

4.0

Within These Lines is a touching, bittersweet look at what life could have been like for Japanese Americans after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Reading about the internment camps they were forced to relocate to always makes me sad, but I particularly appreciated the simple, everyday details that were brought out in this book. It really made it feel like the author had done her research and was portraying the situation as accurately as she could. Not everyone was hateful or racist; there were plenty of people who tried to help in what little ways they could, and even more people who just weren't aware of everything that was going on.
Regarding the plot, there were a few threads that kind of seemed like they didn't lead anywhere, and the last quarter of the book felt a bit rushed, but overall the characters and the storyline were very engaging. The author's notes at the end were also interesting! Definitely a good book for anyone interested in the Japanese American experience during WWII!
