Vicious by V.E. Schwab
5.0
This is the fastest I’ve read a book in a MINUTE. Less than 24 hours total. I LOVED THIS BOOK.
Vicious follows roommates Victor Vale and Eli Cardale as they delve into a dangerous question for a senior thesis—how are superheroes (ExtraOrdinaries) made? This question leads to, among other things, death, and the relationship between Victor and Eli is altered forever.
I don’t know why it took me so long to pick up this book, or any of Schwab’s books, for that matter. I’ve tried ADSOM a few times and have just never been able to get past the first few chapters. I also vaguely remember reading the first book in Schwab’s YA series but I remember nothing about it. Anyways, the point is she’s an author who has been on my radar for SO LONG and I’ve just never picked anything up by her until now but I’m so glad I did.
Everyone in this book was horrible! And I loved it!! I love a morally grey / antihero and this was one of the best examples of that I’ve ever read. In such a relatively short amount of pages, Schwab manages to create an endearing cast of characters who you grow to care about despite their obvious flaws. Bonus points for the dog!
But really! I loved this book, I loved the dynamics between Eli and Victor, I loved the alliterative superhero names, I loved the city being named “Merit” when none of these people have much of that to their names in the first place.
