I Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey McQuiston
5.0
i honestly don’t think i’ll be able to properly explain my thoughts on this book in a coherent manner like… ever tbh. so instead, this review is going to be a (non-exhaustive) list of the things that made me laugh, smile, and just generally filled my heart while i was reading.
— the way cmq decided to use a specific timekeeper as the chapter titles
— how that went off the rails in the last 100 pages or so
— every. single. letter. from the burn pile
— the sarcastic + quick-witted humor (they are one of few authors that can make me full on laugh out loud)
— specifically the fact that chloe named the group chat i kissed shara wheeler, such a queer thing to do. i love it
— any and all instance of texts between chloe + friends
— an enby character named ash??? hello!!
— how ash chose their name, i—
— ash and their incredible convo with smith about gender identity
— chloe’s oblivious determination to keep searching for shara, an icon
— the drama™️ (its very theater gays of them all)
— it’s for the gutters!!!
okay, but in some seriousness, cmq encapsulates the humor and queer gen-z experience like no other. and, honestly, at this point they could write grocery list and it’d find some way to pierce my heart and make a home there. i’ll unabashedly continue to call them one of my favorite authors and cannot wait to see what’s next.
