Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover
5.0
Well shit, this is amazing and emotional. I wasn't expecting this book to be as emotional as it was (especially towards the end.) But wow, I am so impressed with this story. I'll be honest, I haven't really been a huge fan of Colleen Hoover's previous books (at least of the two young adult books I have read) and I wasn't expecting much from this one, but I was curious to see how she would take on older characters as compared to young adult characters. This book blew me away. I finished this book in one day because I was so curious to figure out Miles past with Rachel. This book actually reminded me a lot of A.L. Jackson's [b:Come to Me Quietly|17306969|Come to Me Quietly (Closer to You, #1)|A.L. Jackson|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1377335824s/17306969.jpg|25973239] because it had a similar story line and characters. The boy who is incapable of love and the girl who is young and naive, and the overprotective brother who just so happens to be best friend's with his sisters love interest.
On the very first page, we are introduced to Cap who I immediately liked. I love how he says the placement of her birthmark is an indicator of how she died in her previous life. He was just so random and funny and I had no idea how big of a character he would be throughout the story. Tate was a like-able main character, but I did have a lot of problems with her. Tate was really naive throughout most of this story and sometimes it made me want to strangle her. Miles was my favorite character throughout the story. I liked the mystery of not knowing exactly what made him the way he is. And I will admit that I liked reading the chapters about Miles past more than I liked reading form the present in Tate's perspective. I was so excited to get to Miles chapters from six years ago because it was like unraveling a mystery. I was really invested in his relationship with Rachel and was so curious to find out where it all went wrong. I love the fact that Miles is a pilot, and so is Tate's brother and all their friends because that's a job I've never read about before and I felt that it made the characters memorable and unique.
As the story progressed, I was stunned to find out the truth, and it was worth every minute of trying to figure it all out. It made so much sense. I kept tearing up and trying not to cry over the last few chapters, and I didn't realize just how attached I had gotten to the characters until I cried. This book was a pleasant surprise, and I really loved it. This is the best Colleen Hoover book I've read this far and I'm obsessed with her writing style.
So I really didn't know what to makes of Miles at first, since Tate first meets him in a drunken state, but when we find out later that he was only that wasted because Clayton would have turned six years old that day, my heart literally broke. I finally understood Miles and all that sadness he could never overcome. I loved reading the chapters about him and Rachel and how they had to move in together and figure out how they were gonna make it work, and I was not expecting Rachel to get pregnant. I couldn't believe the way Miles's Dad reacted to her pregnancy as if Miles wasn't his own son, it was ridiculous. After the car accident and Clayton's death, I don't really understand why Rachel blamed him, especially for as long as she did. She let him go 6 years without forgiveness and I know she didn't realize how miserable he was, but still. He deserved happiness and she was the one depriving him of that. But I was so excite to read a chapter from Rachel's perspective at the end, and to see things from her point of view. That chapter of Miles going to Rachel's house and learning about her daughter Claire, my heart broke because they were gonna name their daughter Claire. Lastly, I melted at the end when Miles says "I didn't fall in love with you Tate, I flew", because he's a pilot and askjdlak it was so cute. I know it's cheesy but I love that part. It's the beautiful moments like these that make up for the ugly love."
