Ze zullen verdrinken in hun moeders tranen by Johannes Anyuru

2.0

A book that is way more complex than I expected, with a way deeper meaning, a more complex storyline. During parts of this book, I found myself struggling to understand the idea behind the story, the idea to combine the present to the alternate universe where the unnamed girl claims to come from. I found it a bit too complicated, making me at times to lose interest in the story. Having said that, the message the writer sends about the dangers of radicalization and the way society is turning on Muslims because of this, is powerful. It is an eye opener to many people how some of today’s attitudes could easily lead to such an extreme regime like the one in the alternate universe. What stayed the most with me about this book is the title, which is later explained in the book. We are allowing as a society for young people to be manipulated, radicalized and then for them to died, with no one else but their mothers to cry for them. We created a society where we lead them to violence, to them blame it all on them. We forget about the abandoned families of these people, that can do nothing more than cry and mourn for them.
