If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things by Jon McGregor

4.0

One more book in my Yorkshire/Lakes reading list, which isn’t precisely about the area. If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things by Jon McGregor is a book set around one day in the lives of the residents of a quiet street in a nameless town in the north of England. There is nothing that would indicate the region, but it doesn’t really matter, since I enjoyed the book immensely. I wouldn’t have known about this novel if I hadn’t checked that books-set-in-Yorkshire list. O’m surprised it’s not more widely known. The author was the youngest author listed for Booker prize, and as a debut, the book is stunning.
I will not tell the details since they would spoil the read. I will just tell that the story is about loneliness and closeness, about death and life, and transformation of one into another.
The writing is beautiful and the characters are interesting (although it took me a while to remember who lives where). This is actually the book that made me feel closer to the English people and understand the country more.
