The Magicians by Lev Grossman

2.0

Re-read this four years after my first pass to see if I might have grown to like it. Nope. This is objectively not a good read.
---------------------------------------------
The MC Quentin is irredeemably selfish and misogynistic.

How misogynistic?

Well, he daydreams about groping his female teachers and only ever thinks about his female friends in terms of how much he would like to sleep with them, or if they'd let him sleep with them in the first place. He even goes so far in revealing his bias as to describe a talented magician as looking nothing like a talented magician should because *gasp* she looked like a PRETTY WOMAN. And we all know pretty women can do absolutely nothing of any use! The only thing of use they could possibly do, according to our MC, is decide to let a truly mediocre man like Quentin into their bed.

The supporting characters are under-developed; although, this might be excusable due to Quentin's inability to give a second thought to anyone other than himself. The only exception to this is Eliot, whom I found to be a singular bright spot in this book.

Overall, I was intrigued enough by Brakebills and Fillory and the long drawn out commentary on tCoN to finish the Magicians and read the second book. I DNF'd the third book.
