Sorcerer to the Crown by Zen Cho
3.0
This book has a lot of fun elements put together for a truly whimsical story. That whimsicality, I think, made it hard for me to get into. The characters are so witty and urbane that even when somebody gets eaten it's basically in good fun. The lead female character is especially spunky and fun. She and the titular Sorcerer have the sort of romance you used to see in 30s screwball comedies, sort of. Where the zany woman brings life to the stick in the mud guy. (Katherine Hepburn had a leopard, Prunella has three familiars...) But while appreciated the two characters, I didn't really feel for them since nothing ever felt very deep. Which could be a selling point if you're in the mood for exactly that, of course.
