Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney
5.0
"...late is better than never. Sometimes the early bird eats too many worms and dies."
Amelia and Adam are spending the weekend in the remote Scottish highlands to try and rescue their marriage. Amelia thinks it is make or break time for them and is determined this will be the fix. Adam reluctantly agrees. After the long drive they find the renovated chapel they're staying in. Things feel off from the moment they arrive. The old place is creepy, cold and dusty like nobody’s been there in a long time. So when their romantic trip takes a dark turn, they both start to wonder - can they trust the one they're with? Will this weekend away be the thing to fix their marriage or will it be the thing that breaks them for good?
The story is full of suspense and twists, and a real page turner. It's the first book in a long time I've not wanted to put down. Without giving much more away the story is told from 3 POVs and annual letters to Adam from his wife written on their wedding anniversary are interspersed in the narrative. I loved the inclusion of these, they're a really clever device to contextualize how the couple have come to be in the position they're in. I really love Alice Feeney and will continue to recommend and pick up her books again and again!
