while i think it was a well-written book that masterfully creates the feeling of liminality and loss that permeates the US-Mexico border, i still wonder at the morality of Cantú profiting from the descriptions of violent trauma perpetuated by a system that he helped uphold -- see the comments of this review or this NYT article. more thoughts may come later, when i've had more time to process things.
