The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi
5.0
Sometimes books are just meant to be super fucking fun and entertaining and The Kaiju Preservation Society was it! John Scalzi described this book as a "pop song" book and yup, that tracked. The writing here was so easy to get into and the way the characters and the setting were presented was extremely engaging and humorous. I loved Jamie's perspective and how I slowly came to learn about Kaiju Earth through his eyes.
I was caught a bit off guard at how this book incorporated the pandemic into the story because... I read the synopsis and forgot all about it, I guess? But it was done so in a careful way that didn't make me uncomfortable, even so more because the characters were quickly sent to a place where that wasn't a factor. The world-building here, in general, was super interesting as well considering all the kaiju and science things that were going on.
The characters were also lovely! The humor here really worked for me and I very much enjoyed and had fun with all the shenanigans that happened throughout the story and how the characters interacted with each other. It was the exact sort of lighthearted banter that I love so much and I was very glad to find it here.
The ending was a tiny bit rushed and not at all surprising, but the action moments and the aftermath of it all was still so entertaining that I didn't mind. I had such a good time reading this and experiencing Kaiju Earth through it that I kind of want to read this all over again lol
