Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action by Simon Sinek
3.0
*Thank you to Penguin for sending me a copy of this book to review!*
This is a completely new type of non-fiction read for me, and I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly I managed to read it and how interesting I found some of the points in here. I don’t own a business, nor do I plan on doing so, but the message sin this book were applicable to being a content creator online in many ways. I found that really interesting to read and it was inspiring in some passages. I liked the bits about taking into account why you’re doing what you’re doing and what you’re trying to achieve through your content, as well as comparing yourself to other people. It spoke a lot about motivation too which is something I struggle with.
Though I liked the overall message of this, it was a bit lengthy and could have been at least 100 pages shorter. I think the author was trying too hard to hit a certain page number, which ended up making the book feel really repetitive in nature. The same thing was being said over and over again with slightly different wording. That also made it really dry and quite boring to read after a while, which is a shame because there are some intriguing points and new perspectives and ways of thinking in here I liked. It’s not the most accessible book either, I did struggle every so often with the tangents.
Overall, will be a great read if ti sounds like your sort of thing. But also if you want the overall idea without reading this, I’ve heard there’s a great TED talk by the author.
