Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang

3.0

I think I liked more of the style over the substance for many of these short stories. When it's important to the story, the author does a really good job of slowly adjusting his writing as a view point character changes because of the events they've undergone. Characters that become more intelligent start to sound smarter. The closer a character gets to an event that will change how they perceive things, the more clues a change is coming are weaved into the narrative, giving the reader a good chance to guess what's coming. That I think was well done.

The stories themselves can be rather bland. Two of them I don't even remember what the plot of the story was. It may seem clever to write to write a short story for a scientific magazine to make it sound like an actual scientific journal article. But honestly, how many people read scientific journals for their entertainment value? There are also some heavy religious overtones to a few of the stories, which again is not something I normally look for in things to entertain me.

Probably not going to seek out more from this author.

As a note regarding the audio version I listened to, it needed better breaks between the stories. It was difficult at times to realize what was the end of one story and the start of another, more so when the title of the next story is read with the same enthusiasm and emphasis as the first line of that story.
