Review: Last Boy is the last book in Hannaโs Brooks Hockey universe and oh what an ending it is! Poppy and Walker have a story wrought with emotion, angst and betrayal that tore my heartstrings to shreds! Hannah was able to evoke so many emotions in this book that I could not believe they were the same two MCs at the end!
Poppyโs story was one I had waited for since meeting her in Chosen Boy. Her villainess persona and prickly attitude immediately made me curious to learn more about her and when we learned more about her in Lost Boy, I only wanted to know more! The anger and resentment she had with Walker at times felt overdone but then secrets would be revealed and I would understand why she was so resentful towards him. The way she tried so hard to hate him just made me enjoy her fall that much more.
Walker was a SHOCK. I did not see his story coming and could not believe the way Hannah created the layers in his character and past. The hints and foreshadowing that occur in his story made me ready for his sisterโs book that is coming next but also made me just want to give him a hug. I loved the way he could never fully hate Poppy but instead angrily protected her and became the perfect cinnamon roll alphahole. Seeing the way he was able to see through Poppy made me love him that much more, especially when he made sure to stand up for her actions with her roommates.
This book was not the typical hockey romance as the previous books but instead was uber layered with darker themes. Hannah was able to intertwine the plot with themes of the crime world an blue collar life in a way that added mystery to the story. I also found the โdealโ Walker goes through with his Uncle to protect Poppy to add just the right amount of angst and grit to Poppyโs character arc since it pushed her to act and accept her true feelings for him. Overall, I cannot say how sad I am to see this series come to an end! Hannah really gave a wonderful send off with Poppy and Walkerโs emotional HEA!
Rating: 5/5, the end is here and oh what a way to go! Poppy and Walker were the best way to say goodbye to the Brooks Puck Boys and I canโt wait for whatโs to come!
Thank you to Hannah for sending me this ARC!
